Here is a glimpse out of the window from my good friend’s 1.5 bed on Bedford Ave between North 8th and North 9th st in the Burg. As you can see, many of the backyards behind Bedford Avenue’s antique housing are well maintained by residents. Ideally when looking for a rental within 8 blocks of the Bedford L train you have a few options. Either pay an overpriced amount around $2,600(1 Bed) - $3,400(2 Bed) and up, or find a run down apartment, put some work into it, and stay for a couple years. When my friend found his 1.5 Bed the apartment was in a horrible condition. The walls in the living room were painted avocado green, the bedroom walls were painted purple with clouds drawn on the ceiling, and filthy multi colored industrial carpeting covered half of the apartment’s floors. The rental price was $1,800 so he decided that the price was right and convinced his landlord to pay for paint. After repainting, cleaning, removing the carpeting and doing some floor work the apartment now looks like a different place. Honestly the work might be hard but worth it. The unit could probably now rent for around $2,400 and he is still paying $1,800, saving around $6,000 dollars.

I must say that living on Bedford ave in Williamsburg definitely has its perks. You can walk to tons of great shops, galleries, and restaurants in minutes, or stroll to McCarren Park to enjoy the sun and some activities. The neighborhood is cute and filled with trees blooming white and pink flowers during the spring time. On the weekend the streets are packed with vendors, tourists, and locals looking to stroll through Williamsburg to enjoy great food, city views, and bargain prices easily found at flea markets and warehouses. By the way, to all of those hipster haters who believe that the Burg is their stomping ground, GET OVER IT! The truth is that the community has become very diverse and people of all kinds are attracted to the area. If you are looking for a quite residence I recommend staying off of Bedford ave as it can get noisy Friday and Saturday nights.
